Green Line partially pays the victim; HC gives 30 days to pay in full

Dhaka – Private bus operator Green Line has partially paid an amount as compensation to a victim who lost his leg after being run over by one of its buses driven recklessly last year.

Earlier, the High Court ordered the company Green Line Paribahan to pay 5 million taka to Russel Sarkar as he lost his left leg after one of its buses knocked him down near Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover in the Dhaka’s Dholaipar area on April 28, 2018.

The court had set April 10 to pay the amount to the victim or face shut in selling its tickets from April 11.

The owner of the transport company Md Alauddin, turned out to the court and handed the cheque of 500,000 taka to Rusel inside the court room of High Court bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader.

The court also asked the owner to pay the rest of the amount in 30 days.

Alauddin, earlier in the day, told the court that he could not pay the whole amount as he was suffering huge loss in the business. The owner also cited that his elder son had become blind and his wife had been suffering from kidney failure.

He prayed for exoneration in paying the compensation to Russel. But the court asked him to pay the amount by afternoon Wednesday.

And, he turned up to the court and said that he could not comply to pay money earlier as per its order as he was sick.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the owner’s unwillingness to pay the money, the court said Russel was a day labourer before he lost his leg under a bus of the company. But the company runs its business without paying the amount to the victim.

The court on April 4, ordered the company to pay 5 million taka to Russel by April 10.
