Dhaka – Jailed former Bangladeshi prime minister Khaleda Zia has been shifted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for medical treatment from Nazimuddin Road prison on Monday, officials said.
The 73-year old politician who is also the chief of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was taken to the hospital amid tight security in the noontime as her health condition deteriorated.
Khaleda has been in jail since February 8 last year after a court convicted her in embezzling fund intended for orphans during her tenure as prime minister between 2001 and 2006. The court initially sentenced her five years in jail, but the jail term was doubled to 10 years by a high court bench.
The former prime minister has been facing trail in another graft case for awarding a business contract to a Canadian firm.
