Bangladesh to soon become a higher middle income country

Dhaka – Bangladesh will soon become an upper middle income country as the government implements enormous development works as per its vision to turn the South Asian country into a prosperous one by 20141.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told this in parliament on Wednesday while responding to questions from lawmakers during her weekly question-answer session.

Hasina was responding to a question from treasury bench lawmaker M. Abdul Latif from a Chattogram constituency.

“We will soon become a higher middle income country,” hoped the prime minister who devised Vision 2021 and Vision 2041 to improve the country. Hasina planned to achieve middle-income status for Bangladesh by 2021 and a prosperous country by 2041. Bangladesh has now become a lower-middle income country and qualified to graduate to be a developing nation from the group of Least Developed Country.

The scripted reply of the Prime Minister was tabled in the House as the proceedings began with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Hasina highlighted initiatives that her government had undertaken during her last two tenure saying she was working to turn Bangladesh into a prosperous country.

“We have announced “Vision-2021” aiming at Bangladesh to be a middle income country, freeing it from hunger and poverty by ensuring economic improvement of the people of my country and creating employment.”

She said Bangladesh has become a role model of socio-economic advancement in the world despite facing various local and international challenges.

“It is not only our claim, but it was also recognized internationally,” she said.

Bangladesh has reduced poverty to 21 percent in 2017-18 which was 40 percent in 2005, she said adding that it was possible only because of the government’s pragmatic measures to accelerate development.

The per capita income of Bangladesh now stands at US$ 1,751, which was increased by US$ 141 in the last one year, compared to only US$ 543 at the end of BNP-Jamaat alliance government in 2006.

The per capita income will be US$ 5,500 by 2031 while it will be US$ 16,000 in 2041, Hasina projected adding that her government was now working for formulation of a 2021-2041 development plan.
