Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the police force to remain alert so that no innocent people are subjected to torture by the law enforcement agencies.
The Prime Minister gave the directive while inaugurating the annual Police Week-2019 at Rajarbagh Police Lines on Monday.
“You should to keep in mind that no innocent person fall victim to torture and harassment by you,” Hasina told the gathering organized on the occasion of police week with the theme of building people-police unity and eliminating drugs and militants.
The five-day police week began Monday to run through Friday.
She remained the officers that the duty of police to protect mass people from any type of harassment.
“People expect this from you,” she said affirming her government’s resolve to turn Bangladesh Police a people-friendly organization eliminating the colonial era mindset.
The Prime Minister informed that the police-people had been risen to 1:801 now from 1:1355 in 2009 saying that her government would continue to enhance the police strength to meet future demand and improve police-people ratio.
“Measures will be taken to increase modern vehicles, logistics, arms, land allocation, and improve infrastructural development for the police force,” she said according to her party’s manifesto announced ahead of the December 30 election.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Inspector General of Police Jabed Patwari and senior government officials attended the inaugural session among others.
The prime minister adorned 349 police personnel with Bangladesh Police Medal and President Police Medal (PPM) in recognition to their professional excellence.
Out of them, 104 received BPM (service) and 40 received BPM (bravery) medal while 143 received PPM (service) and 62 received PPM (bravery) medal.
Hasina hoped that the awards would motivate them to be more spirited in discharging their duties, urging police to play more proactive role for ensuring road safety and against drug abuse.
The prime minister inspected the parade and took salute of different contingents of Bangladesh Police.
