Dhaka – The election authorities have validated candidature of Atiqul Islam, a ruling Awami League candidate, and four others to run for the mayoral by-election in the Dhaka North City Corporation, officials said.
But the nomination paper filed by musician Shafin Ahmed was cancelled as his submission was faulty. Ahmed filed the nomination under opposition Jatiyo Party ticket.
The by-election to the DNCC mayoral position will be held on February 29. The position fall vacant after mayor Annisul Huq died on November 30, 2017.
The nominations of four other contenders validated are; Anisur Rahman Dewan of National People’s Party, Boby Hazzaz of Nationalist Democratic League, Shahin Khan of Progressive Democratic Party, and Abdur Rahim.
The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party has been staying away from the fray after the party faced a debacle in December 30 general election with wining in only six out of 300 parliamentary seats.
The party alleged that the general election was rigged.
However, the nomination papers of Awami Legaue candidate Atiqul Islam and four others were declared valid by the EC today, said sources at the EC.
