CEC rules out further delay on voting date

Dhaka – Bangladeshi election commission has ruled out the possibility of further delay in holding the national election.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, who revised the election schedule on Monday setting December 30 for voting, on Tuesday said he has been conducting the 11th national election having a different perspective.

“There is not room for making further delay,” Huda told reporter adding that a new parliament must be formed by January 29, 2019.

The head of the election commission compared the present perspectives – a transparent election under a partisan government – with the previous elections, conducted either under caretaker administration or military-backed government.

The Chief Election Commissioner on Thursday announced the election would be conducted on December 23, but he revised the date as the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies, which boycotted the previous 2014 election, decided to join the polls asking the commission to delay the election a month.

The opposition alliance seemed to be unhappy with the seven-day delay saying that they stick to their demand for a month deferral. The BNP, the main component of the opposition alliance, however, continues the sale of nomination papers among the party aspirants.

Hundreds of leaders and their supporters gathered in front of the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters in central Dhaka chanting slogans in favour of their leaders. The party began the nomination sale on Monday and its leaders bought tickets for Khaleda Zia, the party chief jailed for conviction in graft cases, to join the election fray from the prison.

The CEC defended his position to maintain the latest date he set for conducting the polls saying that an Islamic religious congregation, which is called Bishaw Istema by the international Tabligue Jamaat, will be held in Dhaka.

He also pointed out the Christian festivity of X Mas.

“We’ve considered a lot to set the date on December 30,” he said asking the administration to get prepared for the election on the revised date.
