Deal on defence cooperation likely between Bangladesh and Saudi Arab

Dhaka – Dhaka and Riyadh are likely to sign two instruments for cooperation in the field of defence and information communication technology as Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left for Saudi Arab on a four-day official visit.

Hasina left Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday for Riyadh at the invitation of the Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Foreign ministry officials said memoranda of understanding on defence and ICT cooperation are likely to be signed between the two countries during the visit.

Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali at a press conference on Monday said that safe repatriation of Rohingya Muslims to their home will also be discussed during the meeting between Bangladeshi premier and the Saudi King.

Issues related to labour welfare, promotion of bilateral trade and investment, development cooperation and greater unity and prosperity of the Muslims are expected to be discussed during the meeting.

A flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines flew for the Saudi capital carrying the prime minister and her entourage members in the afternoon from Dhaka.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Kader, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister SM Shajahan Kamal and others saw the prime minister off at the airport.

The prime minister is scheduled to hold a meeting with the leaders of Council of Saudi Chamber (CSC) and Riyadh Chamber of Commerce at her place of residence on Wednesday.

She will have an audience with the Saudi King at Royal Palace later in the day. Hasina is expected to hold a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince, Deputy Premier and Defense Minister Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz on the same day.

She will inaugurate Bangladesh Chancery Building in the Diplomatic Quarters in Riyadh.

The prime minister will leave Riyadh for Madinah by air on Wednesday ebening evening to offer prayer at the Rowza of Prophet Mohammad at Masjid Al-Nabawi.

On Thursday, the Hasina will arrive in Jeddah where she will lay the foundation stone of the Chancery Building of Bangladesh Consulate General.

She will perform Umrah in Makkah after Esha prayers. The prime minister is scheduled to return home from Jeddha on Friday morning.
