Dhaka – The ruling Awami League nominated candidate has been elected mayor of Gazipur City Corporation defeating his rival contestant from the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, officials said on Wednesday.
According to election commission, Md Jahangir Alam of the Awami League bagged a total of 400,010 votes while his nearest contestant Hasan Uddin Sarker of BNP secured 197,611 votes.
Returning Officer Raquib Uddin Mondal at a press conference announced the unofficial result of the city election as the counting of ballots from 416 out of 425 polling station ended in the morning.
The election commission suspended voting in nine polling stations over allegations of vote rigging, snatching of ballots, falsification and other irregularities, the officer said.
The voting was generally peaceful on Tuesday.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party at a press conference rejected the election result saying that it was manipulated by the ruling party. The party’s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded fresh election.
On the other hand, the ruling Awami League hailed the election commission for conducting a ‘free and fair’ election. The party’s general secretary Obaidul Quader said that it was the refection of the people’s mind.
