Dhaka – An inbound passenger travelling to Bangladesh can bring maximum eight mobile phone sets for personal use at a time without prior permission from authorities, officials said on Thursday.
Of the eight, the passenger must pay duty for six at the port of entry. Two are tax-free, an official at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority said adding that the provision will come into effect from January 1.
Presently a passenger can bring five mobile phone sets.
The latest decision came following suggestions from the customs authority, said the official.
BTRC official Sarwar Alam said individuals are seen very often bring more than one telephone sets for personal use or as gifts for their relatives in Bangladesh. The decision was taken to make the process hassle-free, he added.
Bangladesh imported more than 30 million mobile handsets in 2016. According to Bangladesh Mobile Phone Importers’ Association, of them 8.2 million were smartphones while the rest were basic or featured phone.
