Girl killed after rape on speeding bus in Tangail, police say

Dhaka – Police on Tuesday arrested five people over killing a girl after rape in a speeding bus in central Bangladeshi district of Tangail.

The suspects admitted that they raped and killed the 25-year old girl when she was travelling alone to Mymensingh from Bogra by a bus on Friday night, police said.

After killing, the alleged rapists threw the body in a bush by the side of a road in Madhupur sub-district of Tangail.

Madhupur police on Monday arrested the bus driver, Habib, 45, supervisor Safed Ali, 55, and bus assistants Shamin, 25, Akram, 35, and Jagangir, 19, as they were operating the same bus on the same route.

According to an officer, three of them confessed to their involvement in the rape, murder and throwing the body in the bush, from where the police recovered and buried it as unidentified body.

The girl was identified by her family as Rupa. Hailed from Tarash upazila of Sirajganj, Rupa was a student of LLB at Ideal Law College in Dhaka. She used to work for a non-governmental organization and was posted in Sherpur.

She travelled to Bogra on Friday to attend the teachers’ registration exam. She then took a bus of Chhoan Paribahan from Bogra for Mymensingh. The bus was carrying a handful of passengers aboard, and at one stage all but Rupa got down the road after it crossed Bangabandhu Bridge, according to family sources.

Family members said Rupa was connected through mobile phone with her brother Hafizur Rahman until 10 pm. Rahman could not connect her until the following morning and he himself travelled to Mymensingh on the following day in search of his sister.

He filed a general diary with local police station mentioning that his sister went missing as she was travelling by a bus.

On information that an unidentified body was recovered by Madhupur police, Rahman rushed there and identified his sister seeing the photograph that police captured after they recovered her.

Based on his information, police intercepted the bus and arrested the five.

Three of the accused – Shamim, Akram and Jahangir – gave confessional statement to the court in Tangail. The court ordered them to be sent to jail.

Police officer Shafiqul Islam said the two other accused will be produced before the court on Wednesday.
