“Rapists” remanded in custody

Dhaka – Two alleged rapist have been remanded in custody after they were captured in a case filed by two female students of a university, court officials said on Friday.

Among the rape suspects Ahmed Shafat was remanded for six days while Shadman Sakif for five days for custodial interrogation.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Raihan Ul Islam granted the police plea for custodial interrogation of the suspects in the case that they raped two female students at Rain Tree restaurant in Dhaka’s Banani neighbourhood in late March.

Police on Thursday night arrested the duo in north-eastern district of Sylhet where the suspects were hiding after the students filed case with Banani police station earlier this week.

They were brought to Dhaka on Friday morning.

Police said primary investigation has revealed that they were involved in the rape.

Evidence has been found that the Shafat and Sakif were involved in the incident, Krishna Pada Roy, a joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told reporters at DMP media centre.

The rape victims filed the case with Banani Police Station on Saturday against five people including Shafat and Nayem.
