Police indict 38 in journo Shimul murder

Dhaka – A municipality mayor and 37 others were indicted for the murder of Pabna correspondent of Daily Samakal Abdul Hakim Shimul, police said on Tuesday.

Investigators pressed charges against Shahjadpur Municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru and 37 others and submitted the report to a court, according to investigation officer Monirul Islam.

Shimul was gunned down when he was covering a clash between two rival groups of the ruling Awami League party’s local unit on February 3.

One of the groups was led by the municipal mayor Halimul Haque Miru, who used his shotgun during the clash. Investigation revealed that Miru gunshots wounded Shimul who died in a hospital a day after.

Police later arrested Miru and seized his gun. The mayor admitted that he fired guns during the clash.

A case was filed by the victim’s wife accusing 18 people while the others were identified based on video footage of the incident.
