Verdict on appeal against Tarique’s acquittal Thursday

Dhaka-The High Court(HC) has set to hand down its judgment on Thursday after the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC)  challenged a lower court verdict that acquitted BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case, officials said on Wednesday.

The HC will also deliver verdict on another appeal as Tarique’s friend and business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun filed against the trial court verdict that had awarded him to seven years in jail in the same case.

The HC combined bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain fixed the date for the delivery of the judgment on Wednesday, said ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan.

Earlier on June 16, the joint bench kept waiting its verdicts to be delivered any day after it concluded hearing of the appeals.

On January 3, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan appealed to an HC bench to fix a date for hearing its prayer challenging the acquittal of Tarique, elder son of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in the case.

In 2009, the ACC lodged the case against Tarique and Giasuddin Al Mamun for illegally sending Tk20.41 crore to Singapore between 2003 and 2007.

On November 17, 2013, a Dhaka court acquitted Tarique and sentenced Mamun to seven years imprisonment and fined him Tk40 crore.

On December 5 that year, the anti-draft watchdog body prayed to the HC challenging Tarique’s acquittal in the politically sensitive case.

The HC asked the lower court to send the case records to it and issued an order to Tarique to surrender before the trial court on January 19, 2014 following the appeal.
