Dhaka – Narayanganj mayor-elect Selina Hayat Ivy on Friday meet with her rival Shakhawat Hossain Khan to offer sweetmeats for her victory in the just-closed election to the city corporation.
Ruling Awami League candidate Ivy, according to the final count, defeated her rival Shakhawat Hossain of opposition Bangladesh Nationalist nearly by 80,000 votes on Thursday.
Her visit to the defeated candidate came as a good political gesture.
Accompanied by her brother Ali Reza, Ivy reached the home of Shahkhawat at Kazipara in the city at about 11 am. Ivy was welcomed by Shahkhawat’s wife and daughter.
Shahkhawat is learnt to have assured Ivy of assistance in running the office of the mayor.
The election to the Narayanganj City Corporation held peacefully on Thursday with the electors casting their votes in a festive mood.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Nationalist Party of former prime minister Khaleda Zia alleged that the election was rigged. A central leader of the party demanded judicial inquiry into the allegations.
The party’s senior joint secretary general Rizvi Ahmed made the allegation at a press conference on Friday saying that the presence of the voters in the election was thin because of non-deployment of the army troopers to maintain order.
Earlier, Shakhawat Hossain was happy with the election. But he claimed that there was “subtle rigging”.
