Dhaka – Opposition Jatiyo Party led by former military dictator Hussain Muhammad Ershad extended support to Selina Hayat Ivy, a mayoral candidate nominated by ruling Awami League party, in Narayanganj City Corporation elections.
Voting in the mayoral election will take place on December 22.
Jatiyo Party leader Ruhul Amin Hawlader said that his party will support the ruling party candidate in the polls.
“As part of the party decision, we have extended our support to Ivy,” Hawlader said adding that his party earlier refrained from filing nomination to any of its leaders.
The Election Commission has decided to deploy addition security forces in the city, 20 kilometers away from capital Dhaka. Paramilitary troopers from Border Guard Bangladesh will be deployed as striking force beside crime-busting Rapid Action Battalion, police and members of the Ansar force.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party, an opposition outside parliament, nominated Shahkhawat Hossain Khan, a lawyer by profession to contest the election.
