Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said her party would accept any decision the president takes to reconstitute the election commission to ensure a free and fair national poll scheduled before January 2019.
“The honorable president will take measures as per his will to form the election commission,” Hasina told parliament as the 13th session of the Jatiya Sangsad prorogued.
The tenure of the current election commission headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad is scheduled to expire in early 2016 and President Abdul Hamid will reconstitute the quasi-judicial body as per the constitutional provisions.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the opposition outside parliament because of its boycott of the previous general election in 2014, has put forward a set of recommendations to the president ahead of the formation of the commission.
The Prime Minister in her speech in parliament expressed her determination to hold the next general elections in a free, fair and neutral manner to continue the trend of democracy in the country.
“We want continuation of smooth trend of democracy as it would accelerate the pace of the country’s economic progress,” she said.
Hasina said her party Bangladesh Awami League always wants free, fair and neutral elections to further strengthen democracy.
“We waged movement for establishing rights to vote and food for which the leaders and workers of Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League and other associate organizations sacrificed their lives,” she said.
“The honourable President will hold discussions with all political parties on the issue and constitute the EC and he would constitute the commission in the way he wants … we would see what the President wants and accept it in that way,” she said.
