Khulna – A suspected leader of a pirate group operating in the Sundarbans forest was gunned down in a battle with the law enforcements in the south-western Bangladeshi district of Khulna, police said on Sunday.
The gunfight occurred in Tiyakhal area near the Sonamukhi river of Koyra sub-district leaving Rabiul Islam, 24, the suspect, killed on the scene.
The pirate gang opened fire on policemen sensing the presence of the law enforcements, police also retaliated with bullets, officer Sheikh Shamsur Ali.
Police seized firearms and bullets at the spot.
Islam was wanted in eight cases, including for robbery and abduction, said the police officer.
