The new Indian High Commissioner Vikram Kumar Doraiswami arrived in Dhaka on Monday amid a challenge to rebuild confidence in ties with Dhaka, which has been going through topsy-turvy times over the past year.

He replaced Riva Ganguly Das who has returned home to take up her new assignment at the Ministry of External Affairs.

Doraiswami reached Bangladesh from Tripura state early Monday through Akhaura land border in Brahmanbaria district and then on to Dhaka after brief stop-over.

The routing of his journey is unprecedented for any Indian envoy who served in Dhaka apparently the north-eastern states are under special focus by New Delhi and much of its connectivity with the rest of the country is now through Bangladesh by way of transhipment of goods along with similar other facilities.

He was greeted by local officials in Brahmanbaria.

He pledged to strengthen bilateral ties and he was “delighted” to be in Bangladesh.

His choice for India’s envoy in Bangladesh interestingly has an historic link. His father, who was in the Air Force, fought against the Pakistani Army during the 1971 Independence War.  It will be his added advantage in Bangladesh under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ruling Awami League government which led the war..

A career diplomat and fluent in Chinese language, Vikram Doraiswami, takes up his new assignment at a time when India needs to seriously address issues that has not been taken in good humour by Bangladesh, including the sharing of water of the Teesta river, border killings and the very recent onion crisis for the second successive year due to his government’s sudden ban reportedly after rain-triggered crop loss.

India is also concerned about increasing China-Bangladesh ties amid Pakistan’s reported interest to improve ties with Dhaka.
