Lawmen have arrested the prime suspects in a case filed over gang rape of a woman at a dormitory in the north-eastern city of Sylhet, police said on Sunday.
Two suspects – Saifur Rahman and Arjun Lasker – were captured from remote areas of neighbouring Sunamganj and Habiganj districts as the police believe they were trying to cross the border to India after they were accused in the case.
Officer Hayatunnabi said Rahman, 28, was arrested at Chhatak upazila early Sunday. The other accused Lasker, (25), was apprehended at Durlabhpur village in Mantala border area of Habiganj’s Madhabpur upazila, according to Golam Dastagir, the chief of local Madhabpur police station.
They along with few others on the evening of Friday intercepted a couple when they came to visit the Murari Chand (MC) College in Sylhet. The accused tied the husband in a room and raped the women inside the hostel.
The victim’s husband later filed a case with local Shah Paran police station accusing a number of people, including six named in the FIR, for the rape. The police immediately raided the hostel and recovered firearms from the room of Saifur Rahman, who is leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League party, and a former student of the college.
The four other accused – Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, Tarek Ahmed and Rabiul Islam – are still on the run.
Police say only Mahbubur is a resident student of the college and a legal border of the hostel. The rest others are former students.
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said in Dhaka that none of the accused in the case will be spared.
