Six persons, including activists of the student wing of the ruling party, was accused in a gang rape of a woman inside the dormitory of a college in the north-eastern city of Sylhet, police said on Saturday.
The husband of the victim filed the case after a group of resident students of Murari Chand (MC) College in Sylhet raped the women inside the hostel on Friday night.
Six names were included in the First Information Report while some others remained unnamed, according to the case filed with Shahporan Police Station, located nearly 200 kilomters north-east of the capital Dhaka.
Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Arjun Lasker, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, Tarek Ahmed and Rabiul Islam are the accused. Police said they were trying to capture the alleged rapists. They also raided the dormitory earlier in the day and recovered arms from the room of one of the leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Saifur, Mahbubur, Arjun and Mahfuzur are students of MC College while the rest are outsiders, officials said adding that they were staying inside the hostel despite the authorities had asked students not to live there because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
According to the case statement, the couple went to visit the college campus in Tilagarh area of the city in a private car on Friday night. The gang intercepted the car and forcibly took them to the hostel. They tied the husband and rape her wife, who was later taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Police officer Abdul Kaiyum said police rescued the victim and sent her to the One-stop Crisis Centre of the hospital.
He said a case was filed under Arms and Ammunition Act against Saifur as they recovered them from Saifur’s room.
