Bangladesh’s Covid-19 deaths top 5,000

Bangladesh has reported more than 5,000 deaths from novel coronavirus since the first cases were reported in early March, according to official statistics released on Tuesday.

With 28 deaths reported in the last 24 hours ended on Tuesday morning, the death toll from the virus rose to 5,007. The death rate is 1.42 per cent, far below the global death rate from the virus.   

According to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) a total of 1,557 new infections were reported as 14,164 samples were tested during the time.

The total number of infection is now 352,178, it added. The current rate of infection is 10.99 percent, while the total positivity rate stands at 19.05 percent.

Bangladesh is the 15th worst affected countries in the world in terms of the number of cases.

A total of 14,164 samples were tested across the country in the last 24 hours.

Some 2,073 Covid-19 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, the health directorate said adding that the total number of recovery stands at 260,790. The recovery rate is 74.05 percent.

Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19 on March 8 and the first death from the virus was reported on March 18.
