Irresistible Sheikh Hasina: Third term Power in a Row

by Omer Selim Sher in Ottawa,

The Awami League government is in power for the third consecutive term. In the third term, the Awami League government has completed 20 months. On January 8, 2019, a new cabinet was formed under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the chief of the ruling party.

These 20 months were challenging, tumultuous and ordeal for the Awami League. Especially, since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, the Awami League has had to deal with one adverse situation after another.

For the first time in its three terms in power, the government is facing a major challenge in dealing with this unfavourable situation. In particular, the economic crisis, public health problems, corruption, in some cases incompetence of those in charge, and the relentless failure of many government measures have been called into question.

But despite such a situation, the popularity of Sheikh Hasina has increased and she has been established nationally and internationally as a symbol of trust and leader to reckon with. People firmly believe that only she can take the country forward and that name is Sheikh Hasina.

In the third term of the Awami League government under Sheikh Hasina seems to have become irresistible, indispensable and inevitable. Almost all the people of Bangladesh now believe that there is no worthy leader to run this country except Sheikh Hasina at least currently.

All the people of Bangladesh generally believe that Sheikh Hasina is a worthy leader and she cares about her people. Almost all the people of Bangladesh think that if a few other people in the government had done the way Sheikh Hasina did, the face of this country would have changed.

Almost all the people of Bangladesh believe that Sheikh Hasina has no personal ambition and not greedy other than the working for the welfare of the people. Almost all the people of Bangladesh think that Sheikh Hasina does not compromise on the rights and welfare of the people.

The people of Bangladesh also believe that Sheikh Hasina is the only one who can take action against wrongdoers and criminals without any fear or favour. Besides, Sheikh Hasina has achieved many milestones. These are not acquired through political propaganda, but every step has to be achieved by being responsible and having an extraordinary wisdom.

Sheikh Hasina was the Prime Minister for the first time from 1996 to 2001. She did a lot of positive and good work during that term. Even after taking many positive steps including the Hill Tracts Peace Accord and the Ganges Water Agreement, Sheikh Hasina accepted the planned criticism at that time and the then BNP-Jamaat alliance government unitedly targeted Sheikh Hasina and brought Sheikh Hasina to the center of criticism.

She was elected for the second time in 2008 and since then she has gradually changed from Sheikh Hasina of Awami League to Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and onto the world stage. There were once a number of national leaders in the politics of Bangladesh and the people had options, opportunities to compare. Who runs a good country? Sheikh Hasina, Khaleda Zia or Hussein Mohammad Ershad? Sheikh Hasina has risen to a unique height due to her hard work and political decision of farsightedness one after another. Where there is no one to catch her.
