EDITORIAL: DNCC must push through its billboard, cable cleaning programme

Mayor Atiqul Islam has taken a welcome step to clean his Dhaka North from illegal billboards and overhead cables as they not only look ugly, but killing whatever beauty is left of Dhaka’s posh areas like Gulshan, Baridhara and Banani, much of which has turned into a commercial jungle.

Bulldozers and waste collecting vehicles were out and many appeared to be upset as the “illegal billboards” were pulled down. It is just that we have become so habituated to get away with many illegal ways that paying a little tax hurts despite making good money.

The cobweb of cables, especially for providing television channel connections, is another ugly part of our Dhaka. They too must be hidden in one way or the other, but if snapped suddenly the TV owners will not spare Mr. Atiqul Islam.

The Dhaka North and South City Corporations must first ask the cable operators to pay tax with which an underground network can be created. Otherwise, it will also irritate TV viewers.

Corruption at every level must be addressed and those involved must be sacked before facing the court. Please do not give in to pressures from vested groups when you undertake a good decision. Somebody will always be hurt, but then again you will be praised to dare them to achieve your mission.

Why not accept the sweets the mayor has offered instead of being embarrassed by being penalised.

Keep up the good work Mr. Mayor! Good luck!
