Thousands of men, women and children are now crowding different tourist destinations across Bangladesh despite new cases of COVID-19 are still being reported daily, local officials said Sunday.

The officials in the famed tourist town of Cox’s Bazar overlooking the Bay of Bengal and the other Kuakata Beach town said after the government permitted the re-opening of hotels and other facilities, the tourists are thronging to break out of a long lock downs.

“We have asked police to ensure that the tourists maintain minimum health instructions especially wearing masks to help prevent spread coronavirus,” one official in Cox’s Bazar told newsnextbd.com.

This was echoed by officials and those in the tourism business in other tourist spots including the south-eastern hill districts of Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari.

Hotel owners said they were happy to see the return of the tourists and looked to cover their losses in the coming winter season starting from November.

Thousands of small businesses and employees were unemployed during the shutdown. It is a great relief for them too.

“I spent a very difficult time in my village home with acute shortage of cash … Thank Allah that I am to work,” Ashraful Huq, a staff in a Cox’s Bazar hotel, told newsnextbd.com

Internal tourism has been increasing over the past years as the economy picked up with Bangladeshis now spending more in other pleasure activities, including shopping as stores have reopened too across Bangladesh.
