The government will hand 53,340 more homes to families having no accommodation to live in as part of its campaign to bring all landless people under the national housing scheme.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to distribute those homes among the landless families on Sunday, the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Ahmad Kaikaus told reporters on Thursday.
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the distribution ceremony of the second phase of the Asrayan-2 project trough a video conferencing from her official Ganabhaban residence.
Earlier, Prime Minister Hasina gave 69,904 tin-roofed houses to the homeless and landless families on January 23.
Under the scheme, joint ownership of two-decimal house land alongside a modern abode will also be given to both husband and wife of each family.
By December next year, 100,000 more houses will be given as part of the government’s move to rehabilitate the country’s homeless people, Kaikaus said.
He said each family is getting the assets worth some 2.6 lakh takas, if the value of two-decimal land is on an average Taka 50,000. The construction cost of every house is nearly 200,000 taka, while the cost of utility connectivity is some 10,000 taka.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina undertook the Ashrayan project in 1997. Some 373,562 houses have so far been given to homeless and landless families under the Ashrayan project since then.
