41 including Rana Plaza owner indicted for murder

Dhaka: A Dhaka court has indicted 41 persons, including Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana and his parents, for murder over the building’s collapse that killed more than 1,100 people in 2013.

District and Sessions Judge SM Quddus Zaman passed the order on Monday after rejecting the defendants’ discharge petition.

Of the accused, seven are in jail and as many are absconding while 27 others are on bail. Thirty-six of them present in court during the hearing.

Witness deposition will start from September 18.

More than 1,100 people, mostly readymade garment workers, were killed when the multi-storied Rana Plaza caved in on April 24, 2013 on the outskirts of Dhaka.

The incident turned the world’s focus on the poor and unsafe working condition in factories in Bangladesh, the second largest exporter of RMG products.

A murder case was filed over the incident while another case accused 18 people of ignoring building code.
