Government plans to scrap Cyber Security Act in a week

Dhaka – The interim government has been contemplating repeal the much-talked about The Cyber Security Act, which was enacted during the previous Sheikh Hasina-led administration replacing the controversial Digital Security Act of 2018, in a week time, an adviser to the government said on Monday.

All the cases filed under the law will also be withdrawn, said Nahid Islam, adviser to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, according to a press release of the ministry.

Other laws that hinder the freedom of speech and of expression are also under the scrutiny of the government, he said while meeting Norway Ambassador Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen at his office of the ICT Division.

The previous government was highly criticized for the abuse of the digital security act as rights groups term it a draconian law as the enactment was used to silence the voices critical of the government and the opposition activists.

After years of criticism, the government in 2023 replaced the DSA by Cyber Security Act that was also allegedly abused to silence the opposition voices. The interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus promised for comprehensive reforms in different sectors after Hasina fled to India in the face of violent protests and student upsurge in August 5.
