Dhaka – Death toll from dengue outbreak has risen to 320 this year, with six more deaths reported in the last 24 hours ended on Monday morning, according to the official data released by the government’s health directorate.
The Directorate General of Health Services reported that 1,297 people were hospitalized with dengue infections during this time, and total number of caseload this year rose to 65,768 since January.
The directorate says, of the deaths, three were reported in the capital Dhaka while the rest were from outside of the capital in the last 24 hours. The total number of infections in districts other than Dhaka were reported 38,434 throughout the year, according to the official counts.
Currently, 4,143 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country while some 61,305 patients have been released from hospitals till Monday.
The South Asian country witnessed its worst-ever dengue outbreak that killed more than 1,000 in 2023 with experts blaming massive unplanned urbanization, effects of climate change and inadequate prevention and control of the mosquito-borne disease.
Some 281 deaths from dengue were reported in 2022.
The government had logged some 206,288 cases in 2003, compared to the previously reported highest caseloads of 101,454 in 2019.
Dengue, a viral infection with flu-like symptoms that spread from Aedes mosquitoes to people, is a common in tropical and sub-tropical climates. The infections intensify during the monsoon between June and September when Adese aegypti mosquito, the carrier of the virus, thrives in stagnant water in Bangladesh.
Most people recover from the illness, but it can turn deadly if it causes internal bleeding and organ failure.
