Dhaka – Tens of thousands of people have gathered in Dhaka’s central Suhrawardy Udyan as the ruling Awami League party accorded a reception to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her outstanding contribution to Bangladesh.
The supporters, activists, well-wishers and leaders of the ruling party, and its front organisations poured in the venue chanting slogans in favour of Bangladesh and Hasina, who is also the president of the Awami League.
The reception was arranged for Bangladesh in March qualified to be graduated to developing nation, launching of a satellite in the orbit under Hasina’s leadership since 2009. Bangladesh has achieved many other successes in the field of poverty reduction, increase of per capital income during the last nine years.
Hasina also was honoured with many international awards including Global Women’s Leadership Award and D. Litt from Kazi Nazrul University of India.
The Awami League’s reception is considered one of the major public show-down ahead of the next general elections due by December this year. The election commission is likely to announce the schedule sometimes in October.
The party expects some 300,000 people will turn out to the Suhrawardy Udyan to greet the prime minister.
Dhaka’s major thoroughfares have been decorated with the photographs of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and images of other development activities. Banners and festoon have been set up at different places of the city.
The entire Suhrawardy Udyan has also been decorated. A big gate has been erected at the entry point to the venue in front of Matsya Bhaban while 40 other colorful gates have been erected from Matsya Bhaban to Shishu Park.
