Dhaka – Two separate road accidents in Tangail have left at least six people killed and dozens others injured, police said on Monday.
Five people, mostly from low income group, died at a hospital after a truck carrying nearly 40 day labourers fell on a roadside ditch at Kalihati town of the district, said officer Mir Mosharraf Hossain.
Thirty-two passengers have been undergoing treatment at Tangail Sadar Hospital, added the officer.
The day labourers were travelling by the open truck from north-eastern district of Habiganj to northern Gaibandha, according to the police officer. The identity of the victims could not be known immediately.
The road fatality came a day after more than 40 people were killed in road accidents in different parts of the Bangladesh.
The other person was killed after a pick-up van ran over him in Mogolpara area of the district. The van dashed a group of workers gathered on the side of the highway.
Bangladesh has a high rate of road fatalities, due to lax implementation of road laws and the poor condition of roads.
Last year, there 4,979 road accidents in which at least 7,397 people, were killed, according to the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.
More than 16,000 passengers were injured in those accidents.
