Dhaka – Unidentified assailants have shot dead a local leader of the ruling Awami League in Dhaka’s Badda neighbourhood, police said on Friday.
The assailants fired their guns on Farhad Hossain, general secretary of the Badda Union Awami League, soon after he came out of a mosque following the Friday prayers.
Police rescued the 50-year old Hossain as he sustained bullet wounds. But the physicians declared him dead after he was rushed to private United Hospital in Gulshan, officer Abul Kalam Azad said.
A police van was stationed near the mosque when the incident occurred. Police could not chase the criminals as the officer said the assailants might have ambushed the AL leader and left the scene quickly by motobike.
Police have launched an investigation into the murder.
“We will be able to capture the criminals reviewing the close circuit camera footage,” officer of Badda police station Nazrul Islam said.
