Dhaka – Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of deploying army troopers to maintain order in the upcoming mayoral elections in three cities.
But, he, said his commission may deploy the troopers in the general election, due by December this year, subject to a decision of the Election Commission.
“Army will not be deployed during the upcoming city polls. But the deployment of army during the next general elections will be finalized after discussion in the commission,” he said inaugurating a training workshop for election officials in southern Barishal district.
City Corporation elections to Gazipur will be held on June 26 and elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal are scheduled for July 30 voting.
The election officials from Barishal and Faridpur zones took part in the training session in Barishal on the use of Electronic Voting Machines.
“We want a free, fair and neutral election to be presented. Electronic Voting Machine can play a vital role in this process,” the chief of the quasi-judicial body said.
