Hasina seeks vote for ‘boat’ in next election

Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called the people to cast vote for her party’s election symbol ‘Boat’ in the next general election due by December this year to see continuation of Bangladesh’s prosperity.

Hasina, also the president of ruling Awami League party, made the call Sunday at a public rally in southern Chandpur district, where she visited for the first time in eight years. She also inaugurated a number of development projects for the district.

The Prime Minister described the ‘boat’ as the symbol of people and referred to ancient myth that ark (ship or boat) saved the humankind, animals and the birds from deluge during the period of Prophet Noah.

“The boat is your symbol which rescues the human beings. The boat of Prophet Noah (AS) saved the mankind along with the animal kingdom and birds while the people of the country earned independence casting vote for the boat,” she said.

If you want Bangladesh to prosper further, cast your vote for the boat again, Hasina said adding that her predecessors, Khaleda Zia and other head of the governments, did hardly anything for the people.

“Nobody returns empty handed after casting vote for ‘boat’ . . . we delivered more than what we had pledged,” Hasina told the crowd organized by district Awami League at Chandpur Stadium.

The BNP did not believe in the country’s independence and could not deliver anything for the national development or people’s welfare, she said about the regime ruled by her arch political rival Khaleda Zia, who is now in jail for corruption.

They rewarded the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh, and handed over the national flag to war criminals while they could not make any development in the past and will not do it in future, she added.

AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former foreign minister and AL Joint Secretary Dipu Moni and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya spoke at the rally chaired by district Awami League president Naziruddin Ahmed.
