Dhaka – Incumbent President Abdul Hamid has submitted nomination paper for the next presidential election slated for February 18 as a candidate for the ruling Awami League, party insiders said on Monday.
A delegation of the ruling party submitted the paper to the Chief Election Commissioner, KM Nurul Huda, the returning officer of the presidential polls on the last day for submission of candidature.
Party general secretary Obaidul Quader led the delegation to the Election Bhaban at Agargaon in the city.
The election commission announced the schedule for the presidential election on January 22 according to the constitutional provisions between 60 and 90 days ahead of the expiry of tenure of president.
Members of the parliament, as per the constitutional provision, elect the ceremonial head of the state.
The Awami League nominated the incumbent president as a party candidate for the second time. Hamid was elected president of the republic on April 24, 2013.
The Election Commission will examine the nomination paper on Wednesday. According to the election schedule, the last date for withdrawal of nomination paper is February 10.
Hamid will be elected unopposed if no other candidate files application for the presidential position.
