Dhaka – At least 10 people were killed in a stampede during a post funeral feast arranged in Chittagong after the death of former City mayor AMB Mohiuddin Chowdhury, police said.
The incident happened at Rima Community Centre in Jamal Khan area of Chittagong where the feast was arranged three days after the death as per the Muslim rite, officer Iqbal Bahar said.
Chowdhury, who served the city for 16 years as mayor, died on Friday of various complexities at the age of 73. He was also the chief of ruling Awami League party’s Chittagong Unit.
A Local police officer said more than 40 people were injured during the stampede. Of them 18 were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital while the others were undergoing treatment at different health facilities in the city.
A total of 11 points in the city were selected for the feast as per the rites. The arrangement at the Rima Community Centre was for the people from other faiths but Muslims.
The stampede occurred at around noontime when several hundred tried to enter into the hall at a time. Some of them fell on the floor and stampeded, said witnesses.
Senior Awami League leaders, including AL organising secretary Mohibul Hassan, rushed to the hospital to see the wounded persons.
Late Chowdhury’s family announced a package of compensation for the families of those killed in the stampede. Each of the families will be given Tk 100,000, said Zawarlal Hazari, deputy office secretary of the City Unit of Awami League in Chittagong.
The families will also receive an additional Tk 5,000 each for the funeral. Besides, the ex-mayor’s family will bear the treatment cost of those who sustained injuries.
Those who died were identified as Krishnapad Das, 41, Subir Das, 47, Jhantu Das, 42, Pradip Talukder, 46, Liton Deb, 50, Dhana Shill, 59, Sukumar Ray,31, Dpankar Das, 42, Uzzal Ray alias Titu, 32, and Ashis Barua, 41, police officer Jahirul Islam said.
In addition to the Chowdhuyr’s announcement for compensation, the district administration reimbursed Tk 25,000 to the families of the deceased and Taka 5,000 to the injured people, said Md. Masudur Rahman Sikder Additional Deputy Commissioner (General).
