Dhaka – At least five people have been killed after a pit caved in and buried them at a stone quarry in north-eastern Bangladeshi district of Sylhet on Tuesday, police said.
Officer Shamsul Alam Sarker said the chunk of stones fall on the extraction workers when they were working at an illegal stone quarry at Bangla Tila in Kanaighat sub-district, more than 220 kilometres north-west of the capital Dhaka.
The accident scene is near the Indian border. Two workers have gone missing after the accident occurred in the morning.
Stone extraction in the hills is officially prohibited. But a large number of people extract the stones from the remote hills to sell them in the local market.
