Dhaka – Bangladesh has discovered a gas-field in southern Bhola district with an estimated reserve of 700 billion cubic feet of natural gas, a top official said on Monday.
Bapex, the state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company, has discovered the field at Shahbazpur of Bhola, an island located at the confluence of Meghna River in the Bay of Bengal.
Cabinet secretary Shafiul Alam came up with the disclosure at a time when gas wells in Bangladesh were drying very fast. He made disclosure after the weekly meeting headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He said, “There’s good news for the country. Bapex has found initially estimated some 700 billion cubic feet of gas reserve in Bhola”.
If the new gas reserve is added to the previous ones, the total gas reserve of that area will reach around one trillion cubic feet, the Alam, also the spokesman for the cabinet, said.
