International desk – A controversial Indian guru has been sentenced to 10 years in jail over rape charge brought by one of her female disciples at his so-called lavish hermitage in Haryana.
Officials said a court pronounce the sentence against the self-styled godman, Ram Rahim Singh, at the district jail of Sunaria near Rohtak, amid tight security as his violent followers went on rampage after his conviction was announced on Friday.
The violence that killed more than 30 people prompted the authorities to impose curfew in some parts of India and enhance security in Haryana, Punjab and the capital Delhi. The court on Monday made the order under section 376 and 506 of the Indian penal code. Previously a special CBI court found the sect leader guilty of raping two of his disciples in 2002.
The followers ran into a riot in Haryana, Punjab and Delhi, leaving 38 people dead and 250 others injured.
Indian authorities deployed thousands of riot police and shut down mobile internet services in Haryana and Punjab till Tuesday, according to Indian media.
Haryana and Punjab ordered schools and colleges shut down while authorities deployed a five-tier cordon around the Rohtak jail where the judge handed out the punishment to the sect leader.
