Dhaka – The High Court on Tuesday stayed for three months the contractual appointment of law secretary Abu Saleh Sheikh Md. Jahirul Haque, officials said.

A bench comprising of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Hossain and Justice Md.  Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman, a lawyer of the Supreme Court on August 8. The court asked the government to explain why his appointment would not be considered unlawful.

The petitioner said the contractual appointment of the law secretary was unlawful.

Previously the court adjourned the hearing of the rule till August 22 after the government requested more time. The hearing continued till August 10.

Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali moved on behalf of the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder assisted the Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.

The government on August 7 appointed Haque as the law secretary for two more years.
