Dhaka – A panel of investigation has recommended actions against seven policemen responsible for eyesight loss of a college student after the cops fired teargas canisters during a recent protest in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area, police said.
Siddiqur Rahman, a Titumir College student, has been undergoing treatment at Shankar Netralaya in Indian city of Chennai. Doctors say his recovery of eyesight is highly unlikely.
The police immediately launched a probe headed by Meer Rezaul Alam, a joint commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, after people from differ strata criticize the law enforcers’ role.
The investigators found seven policemen responsible for the inappropriate use of teargas canisters during the protests.
DMP Commissioner M Asaduzzaman Mia assured that actions would be taken against the cops responsible as per the recommendation by the panel of investigation.
Rahman was severely injured while the police charged batons and lobbed tear gas to disperse students of seven newly Dhaka University affiliated colleges who were demonstrating for examination dates and routines on July 20.
A Policeman shot a teargas canister directly to the agitating students. Siddiqur got injured by that canister.
