Dhaka – Lawmen on Friday arrested son of a senior minister and 10 others for allegedly carrying out vandalism in Pabna, a western Bangladeshi district, police said.
The police picked up Sirhan Sharif Tamal, son of Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif, and the others from different parts of the district after a case was filed following vandalism at Ishwardi sub-district.
The crime scene is located more than 140 kilometers west of the capital Dhaka.
Referring to the local residents, officer Zihadul Kabir said two rival groups of the ruling Awami League party has long been trying to establish supremacy in the area.
The rivals locked in a clash and vandalized many shops and business establishments in Ishwardi on Thursday, he added.
One of the groups was led by Shamsur Rahman Sharif, who is also the lawmaker of Pabna-4 parliamentary constituency, while the other group was being led by Abul Kalam Azad, mayor of Ishwardi municipality, according to the local residents.
Sharif’s group also attacked home of Zubaiyer Biswas, president of Ishwardi unit of Chhatra League.
Police conducted the raids based on a case filed by Atiar Biswas, father of Zubaiyer. Sirhan Sharif Tamal and local Jubo League, the youth front of the AL, leader Rajib Sarkar were made prime accused in the case.
