Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said Bangladeshi media enjoy full freedom.
But should be responsible while enjoying the freedom as press freedom does not mean to malign others, she said while addressing the prorogation of the parliament session.
The 15th session of 10th parliament prorogued on Monday night.
Citing the recent Amnesty International report on freedom of speech in Bangladesh, the Prime Minister Hasina categorically said Bangladeshi newspapers and electronic media enjoy full freedom.
“There is also freedom of speech.”
Hasina, also the Leader of the House, said if anybody wants to enjoy freedom, he or she will have to enjoy it with responsibility.
“It’s the reality … I hope that everybody would remember it,” she said.
She said there are 34 television channels and 750 daily newspapers in the Bangladesh.
“I would like to say those who published the report of Amnesty International that criticism and discussion are continuing randomly against us and this is being aired live. But nobody is obstructing this,” she said.
The prime minister said the newspapers continue to write.
“But anybody doing yellow journalism, disseminating false information and doing malice to anyone, then the victim has the right to protect himself/herself from it,” she said.
