Dhaka – A former Bangladeshi military dictator on Sunday announced a new political alliance comprising smaller political party apparently to flex his political muscle ahead of the next general elections scheduled before early January of 2019.
Hussain Muhammad Ershad came up with the announcement at a press conference in Dhaka that his Jatiyo Party would lead the new alliance. The Jatiyo Party was earlier in the grand alliance led by ruling Awami League party of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The new alliance was named as Shommilito Jatiya Jote.
Ershad, who is a special envoy to Prime Minister now, said his party is no more with the AL-led alliance.
Party insiders say that the new alliance is comprised of 58 political parties.
The army-chief turned president Ershad, who run the country under an iron fist until he was toppled in the face of mass upsurge in 1990, survived in politics with many comprises.
His Jatiyo Party is in opposition in parliament, but leaders of his party are in the cabinet of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
