Dhaka – Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate Monirul Haq Sakku has been reelected as mayor of Comilla City Corporation defeating the ruling Awami League party candidate Anjum Sultana Sima.
According to election result of 101 out of 103 polling centers, the difference between the winner and loser was more than 11,000 votes.
Sakku bagged 68,948 votes while his nearest rival Sima got 57,863 votes. The contested the polls with their respecting party symbols ‘paddy sheaf’ and ‘boat’.
The office of the returning officer of the city polls announced the result after the voting was generally peaceful barring a few incidents of falsification and intimidation allegedly by the ruling party activists.
The election authorities have suspended voting in two centers after reports of disorder.
Sakku, who defeated Sima’s father Afzal Khan in the last election in 2012, alleged that his supporters were barred from entering the polling stations.
The AL candidate conceded defeat. She said she would extend her hands to help the newly elected mayor for the development of the city in the next five years.
