Police fire water-cannon to foil protest in Bangladesh

Dhaka – Police on Wednesday dispersed a march in Dhaka by left-leaning activists protesting the government’s decision to hike in gas prices.

The lawmen fired teargas canisters and water cannons to foil the procession when it reached in front of the National Press Club on way to energy ministry. Democratic Left Alliance (Gonotantrik Bam Morcha) announced the protest as the government increased prices of the gas from March 1.

The left-leaning group demanded withdrawal of the government decision as the protesters say it would make the common people’s life miserable.

The protesters also threw bricks at the lawmen, officer Abul Hasan told reporters.

The government last month announced 22 per cent gas price hike in two phases. The first phase of price hike came into being on March 1. The second phase will be implemented from June 1.

Households using double burners have to pay Tk 800 each from March 1 instead to Tk 650. The single burners’ price was fixed at Tk 750 each against Tk 600.  The compressed natural gas price was revised.
