Dhaka – Transport workers, who called a nationwide strike, on Tuesday night clashed with law enforcement near Dhaka’s Gabtoli Bus Terminal, police said.
The agitating workers set fire to a police outpost and a wrecker parked near the bust terminal, officer Fakhrul Alam said adding that the workers also prevented the firefighters from dousing the flame.
Police tried to disperse the agitation by firing teargas, but the workers blocked the main road setting tyres on fire. The clash began at around 8 pm, said the officer.
Hundreds of commuters remained stranded on both sides of the terminal.
The transport workers called the strike to protest a court verdict that handed down life in prison to a driver responsible for killing five people, including a renowned filmmaker, in 2011 on Dhaka-Aricha highway.
