Suspected left-wing extremist killed in ‘gunfight’

Dhaka – A suspected leader of a banned militant group have been killed in a reported ‘gunfight’ with the law enforcements in northern Bangladeshi district of Paban, said police on Wednesday.

The gun fight occurred at Dhalerchar of the district on Tuesday night, leaving Nistar alias Nizam, 40, dead on the scene, said officer Tazul Huda.

Nizam, wanted in several cases with the local police stations, was a key figure of a left-wing extremist group, he said.

Acting on a tip-off, the lawmen carried out a raid in the area that a group of extremists was reportedly planning for acts of sabotage, he said adding that the group is believed the members of the Sarbohara party.

The suspects fired guns on the policemen as they approached. The lawmen retaliated with bullets.

The bullet-riddled body of Nizam was found after the gun battle, he said.

Police seized firearms and some sharp weapons from the spot, Huda said.
