Dhaka – The Mayor of Dhaka’s southern part on Wednesday said hawkers will not be allowed on the waysides in central Gulistan and its adjoining areas during the weekdays.
“We will not allow anyone to create obstacles to pedestrians during the office hours in the commercial centers like Gulistan and its adjoining areas,” Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon said after a meeting.
The decision, which will be effective from Sunday, came to facilitate unhindered movement of the city dwellers as most of the pavements in the commercial areas are occupied by the hawkers.
Magistrates and police from Dhaka Metropolitan Police will take action if anyone goes against the decision.
The hawkers will be allowed to do business 6:30pm onwards on working days, according to the meeting which was also attended by the leaders of the hawkers.
The Mayor said that the hawkers will be provided with identity cards as his office prepared a list for them.
“They will also get assistance if they want to change their profession. The government will arrange suitable jobs for them,” said the mayor warning actions against those who extort money from the hawkers in his part of city.
He said the police department was requested to take necessary steps to this end.
