Boat capsizes kills 10 in Bangladesh

Dhaka – A passenger boat capsized in Shandhya River of southern Bangladeshi district of Barisal leaving at least 10 people dead and several others missing, police said on Wednesday.

The boat, ML Oishi, went down when it was about to anchor at Dasherhaat station with more than 80 people aboard, said the officer adding that most of the passengers managed to swim ashore.

Divers from Fire Service and Civil Defence department retrieved 10 bodies from the river. Fout other passengers were rescued alive, Superintendent of Police SM Akhteruzzaman told newsnextbd.com by phone.

The accident site is located nearly 110 kilometers south of the capital Dhaka.

Akhteruzzaman estimated that 10 more passengers might have still been missing. Most motorboats plying on river routes in Bangladesh hardly follow any system to resister passengers’ list.

Members of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority joined the rescue operation after the accident, the officer said.
